Team Riders Qualify for 2011 USA Mountain Bike National Championships!

Karla and Julie at Blue Star on the way to the Chainsmoker
Jake, Karla and Joe post race
On Saturday May 6th, eight Methow Cycle & Sport - Blue Star Coffee Roasters team riders competed in the Chainsmoker Mountain Bike Race at Squilchuck State Park in Wenatchee. This race served as the only Washington State qualifier for the USA Mountain Bike Nationals held in Sun Valley from July 13-17th. While the weather was cold, wet and windy, the fun course and depth of competitors made for a great event.

I'm pleased to announce that five MCS - Blue Star Coffee riders have qualified to ride in the National Championships! Stay tuned for race reports to follow!

Jake and Karla--happy to be done!

  1. Oh Yeah, we were happy to be done alright! Rain, sleet, hail, mud and some serious climbing all added to the fun. This was my first mountain bike race in over 10 years, so lucky for me it wasn't too technical. The race website gave fair warning about the climbing, cautioning that we'd be redlined right off the gun. Right they were! I pegged at threshold within the first 25 yards and pretty much stayed there. I had a tough time figuring out my tire pressure before the start. The trails were already muddy and sure to get rougher with each lap. I needed to make sure they ran low enough to give me good traction but not too low to risk of a pinch flat. Thanks to Jake and Joe, I got that sorted out, but not without an embarrasing moment. (note to self: Do NOT wander a parking lot full of guys saying the words "Could you squeeze these and see how they feel???" when referring to tire pressure!!!)
I am happy to report that I have secured my very own pressure gauge and will no longer have to subject myself, my team mates or my tires to the "squeeze test"! YIPEEE I'm going to Nationals!
